..Toulouse’s Judaism Center includes synagogue, library, restaurant and radio station.
Adat Yeshurun is a conservative synagogue in Toulouse, France, and largely caters to Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews. It is a relatively new synagogue, built in the early 21st Century to replace one of central Toulouse’s earlier, aging synagogues.
The building is a modern, brick structure, well designed with sweeping lines that flow into its landscaping. The modern design and sweeping architectural lines are carried indoors, with huge skylights inset into the ceiling in ‘V’ shapes, for striking effect. The structure comprises a synagogue, library, restaurant and radio station. The floor is light colored wood, as is the platform for the bimah at the front. The Ark is made of light wood with heavy red velvet curtains. Several beautiful, decorative Torah scrolls are inside. There is a huge triangular window behind the Ark and a large skylight above the Ark. A lovely red patterned Turkish styled rug decorates the bimah platform. The Rabbi’s podium and wall against which the Ark sits are in darker wood. There are a few decorative chairs which are hand carved with Hebrew writing on the backs, decorative carving on the top, and a red velvet cushion with a gold Star-of-David embroidered into it.
Adat Yeshurun is one of twelve synagogues in greater Toulouse and seeks to be relevant to its congregants and the age in which it is serving.
