The oldest continuously functioning synagogue in Maine
About 16 members attended the congregation’s organizational meeting in 1888. The congregation’s first synagogue was dedicated in 1907. That building was destroyed in Bangor’s great fire of April 30, 1911. A second synagogue, still in use today, was begun in 1911 and dedicated in 1912. Originally an Orthodox congregation, the synagogue became committed to the Conservative movement in 1948.
