The oldest Orthodox synagogue in St. Louis.
Jews settled in St. Louis, the Gateway to the West, in the early part of the 19th century. In 1880s and 1890s there were waves of Eastern European Jewish immigrants. By the 1940s there were nearly 25 orthodox synagogues in the city. Most are now gone.
Only a handful of St. Louis’ Orthodox synagogues remain from that era. The oldest among them is Bais Abraham which celebrated its 120th birthday in 2014. The Congregation moved to its current location in 1973. In 2010 the presidency of Bais Abraham was assumed by a woman, the first woman to become president of a modern Orthodox synagogue in St. Louis.
