A unique and striking example of modern architecture.

emple Akiba was established in 1953. That same year the congregation purchased a lot on Sepulveda Boulevard in Culver City which remains its home today. By 1962 the congregation had outgrown its building and commissioned architect Robert Kennard to design a new building.

Born in Los Angeles, Kennard received his architecture degree from the University of Southern California through the G.I. Bill of Rights. According to the New York Times “(he)&; turned his struggles as a young black apprentice into a lifelong campaign to ease the way for other minority members who are professionals.” Mr. Kennard died at age 74 in 1995.

Kennard’s unique design for Temple Akiba, consisted of two hexagonal structures. Dedicated in May of 1965 the building was completed in 15 months. A 2015 renovation brought the amazing building back to its original beauty.
