An egalitarian Conservative congregation committed to social justice, interfaith dialogue, and the perpetuation of the State of Israel.
Six families established Congregation Beth Shalom in 1922 as a Conservative alternative to the existing Orthodox and Reform congregations of Wilmington. From the original six families Beth Shalom has grown to more than 450 families.
The Congregation’s current building was designed by architect Maurice H. Courland of Philadelphia who designed numerous buildings, including other synagogues in New York and Brooklyn as well as the Philadelphia area. The building was completed in 1956, just one year before Mr. Courland’s death.
The ark doors, dating from 1967-8, were designed by noted sculptor Luise Kaish.
