The southernmost synagogue in the continental United States.
Congregation B’nai Zion was founded in 1887. Services were held in members’ homes until 1907 when a doctor’s office was purchased and converted into a synagogue. Key West and its Jewish community thrived until it was hit by The Great Depression. The population of the city fell to 12,000 from over 30,000 and the Jewish community declined to only 12 families.
World War II brought the establishment of military bases. Once again Key West and its Jewish community grew. In the late sixties architect and Key West native Charles McCoy was engaged to design the present building which was completed in 1969.
