The oldest Jewish congregation in Kansas.
Congregation Emanu-El was established in 1885, only 15 years after the city of Wichita was chartered. Initially, services were held in congregant’s homes and beginning in 1903 services were held in the First Unitarian Church. The congregation’s first temple building was built at the corner of Second and Fountain in 1932. The current synagogue was completed in 1961.
Congregation Emanu-El is the oldest Jewish congregation in Kansas and the home of Reform Judaism in south central Kansas.
