A historic synagogue originally serving many Eastern European and Russian immigrants.
The name Shaarei Tfiloh translates from Hebrew to English as Gates of Prayer.
According to Paul Cordish, the first boy to make bar mitzvah at Shaarei Tfiloh, “My father selected the site because it was a prominent, secure location.” The imposing stone clad synagogue’s site is adjacent to Baltimore’s Druid Hill Park. At the time the synagogue was built the surrounding Park Circle neighborhood was a thriving Jewish community. Since that time most of the Jewish community has moved to more suburban areas yet the Druid Hill Park location has maintained much of its beauty and charm.
Designed by prominent Baltimore architect Stanislaus Russell, the domed synagogue has seating for 700 men on the main floor and a women’s balcony seating 300. Construction was begun in 1921 and completed in 1927. Shaarei Tfiloh synagogue is one of the oldest functioning synagogues in Maryland. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 and appeared in the 1999 movie Liberty Heights.
