A Reform Temple yet also offering Traditional High Holy Day and one-a-month Shabbat services.
In 1895 several immigrant families from Poland and Russia established the Eben Israel Cemetery Association of Cedar Rapids. Next, they hired a shochet, a Jewish butcher, so that they could have Kosher meats. In 1906 they established Beth Jacob synagogue as an Orthodox congregation. In 1922 some of the younger congregants were interested in a more liberal service. Soon they purchased land for a temple but continued to meet for services at the People’s Church and the Knights of Pythias Hall. In 1927 their own building, Temple Judah, was completed.
The transfer of the Torahs and dedication of the new synagogue building took place on August 30, 1964.
