Evoking a Jewish aesthetic, the Temple was designed by an architect member of the congregation.

In 1976 a majority of members of Louisville’s B’rith Sholom congregation voted to consolidate with Adath Israel. However, some thought there was a need for an alternate Reform congregation in Louisville and decided to form a new Reform congregation. 44 founding member families established Temple Shalom. The Temple engaged Rabbi Stanley Miles in 1978. He continues to the present day (2014) guiding the congregation.

The current building was designed by architect Gerald Baron, a member of Temple Shalom. His striking design evokes a distinctly contemporary yet Jewish aesthetic. Everything on the bima, except the chairs and US & Israeli flags, were made by members of the congregation. A significant portion of the items were created by founders of Temple Shalom with work continuing through the years. The most recent project, new Pilgrimage Holiday Torah Covers, was completed in June 2014.

Temple Shalom’s religious school includes over 150 students. The temple has an active sisterhood, Men’s Club, softball team and youth group.
