The last of the original Cambridge shuls to remain in operation.
Temple Beth Shalom, also known as the Tremont Street Shul, is a welcoming, traditional Jewish synagogue located between Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology near Central Square. The Shul’s congregation is diverse in terms of age, backgrounds and styles of worship. To serve this unique congregation both Orthodox and Egalitarian services are offered on Shabbat evening and morning.
In the Post World War II years there was a migration of the Jews in Cambridge to the suburbs. As a result, the synagogues in Cambridge merged in stages. In 1962 Temple Beth Shalom, Temple Ashkenaz and Congregation Beth Israel merged. The merged congregation chose to use the Temple Ashkenaz building at 8 Tremont Street because it was the newest. To mark a new spirit of community cooperation the name was changed to Temple Beth Shalom. The Tremont Street Shul is the last of the original Cambridge shuls to remain in operation.
