One of eight remaining old wooden synagogues in Lithuania.
At one time over 9% of the population of Lithuania was Jewish. There were more than 500 Jewish synagogues and prayer houses. Because timber was plentiful, many of the synagogues were built of wood. The Zeizmariai Synagogue is typical of the old wooden synagogues. Though eight of these wood synagogue buildings remain standing, none are actively in use as synagogues today (2011).
